Kept texting. Kept circling back. Ryan went deep into Bonatti and al-Biruni and Lilly. Traditional horary purists would raise an eyebrow, and fairly. But something interesting happened when we stripped those back and returned to classical technique: we landed in essentially the same place. Just with more precision, and a few more cracks in the foundation.</p><p><strong>Returning</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Signifiers</strong></p><p>Before diving into the new technique, we needed to revisit something foundational: who, in this chart, <em>is</em> Joseph Smith?</p><p>Last time, we chose Mars &#8212; lord of the ninth house, the house of God, religion, and higher philosophy. The reasoning still holds. Joseph Smith isn&#8217;t just &#8220;some other person&#8221; to plug into the seventh house. He anointed himself prophet, priest, and king. He ran for president. He&#8217;s a figure of universal significance within a religious cosmology, the way a king or a head of state would be. You wouldn&#8217;t use the seventh house for the king unless you were the queen asking about your husband. Joseph gets the ninth.</p><p>Mindy raised something worth sitting with: do we even need to chase the applying aspects? The question isn&#8217;t about a specific action &#8212; a particular lie, a single scam. It&#8217;s about the <em>character</em> of a person. And when you look at Mars in Aries &#8212; domiciled, powerful, in its own authority &#8212; sitting right next to Saturn in its fall, you already have a portrait. Two malefics. One strong. One collapsed. Pressed together in the eighth house of darkness.</p><p>Could we just read <em>that</em>? Maybe. But we wanted to go further.</p><p><strong>Bonatti&#8217;s</strong> <strong>Technique:</strong> <strong>Dividing</strong> <strong>a</strong> <strong>Life</strong></p><p>Ryan brought something to the table from his research into Bonatti &#8212; a method for breaking a person&#8217;s life into stages using the triplicity lords of the significator&#8217;s sign. Instead of one universal signifier for Joseph Smith across his entire thirty-nine years, we could assign different planetary rulers to different periods of his life and ask the fraud question of each one separately.</p><p>For this diurnal chart, the triplicity lords of Aries are the Sun (diurnal ruler, first stage), Jupiter (nocturnal ruler, second stage), and Saturn (participating ruler, third stage). Thirteen years apiece, roughly. Three chapters of one life. Three chances to ask: <em>was</em> <em>he</em> <em>a</em> <em>fraud</em> <em>here?</em></p><p>There&#8217;s a legitimate debate about whether to divide into two stages or three &#8212; the deeper Hellenistic roots tend toward two, with the participating ruler serving as a flavoring influence on both halves rather than owning its own period. We explored both readings. They don&#8217;t contradict each other. They just offer different angles on the same slow unraveling.</p><p><strong>First</strong> <strong>Stage:</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>&#8212;</strong> <strong>Youth,</strong> <strong>Vision,</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Grove</strong></p><p>The Sun, exalted in Aries, in the ninth house, in its joy. Unencumbered by malefics. Dignified in every way that matters.</p><p>This is the portrait of a boy who believed. A fourteen-year-old in the thick of the Second Great Awakening, surrounded by tent revivals and competing prophets and an entire culture electrified by the possibility of direct contact with God. He walked into a grove and prayed. Maybe he ate some mushrooms first, but whatever happened, he came out believing he&#8217;d been spoken to by the heavens. And the chart backs that up. The Sun here is self-contained, sincere, maybe naive. There&#8217;s a whiff of self-exaltation &#8212; the Sun <em>exalts</em> <em>itself</em> in its own exaltation &#8212; but for a teenager convinced he&#8217;s heard the voice of God, that tracks. That&#8217;s not fraud. That&#8217;s being fourteen.</p><p>We noted that the Sun sits just nine arc minutes from the anaretic degree &#8212; the very end of Aries, a signal of imminent change, a shift in dignity about to occur. Something is coming. But it hasn&#8217;t arrived yet. In this first period, the innocence holds.</p><p><strong>Was</strong> <strong>he</strong> <strong>a</strong> <strong>fraud</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> <strong>stage?</strong> Unanimous: No.</p><p>If you strip the name of the person away and just read the chart, you&#8217;d describe someone with a strong moral compass, a sincere spiritual seeker, maybe a solid philosopher or teacher. You would not describe a con man.</p><p><strong>Second</strong> <strong>Stage:</strong> <strong>Jupiter</strong> <strong>&#8212;</strong> <strong>Expansion,</strong> <strong>Congregation,</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cult</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Personality</strong></p><p>Jupiter, exalted in Cancer, in the eleventh house, also its joy. Three degrees from its exact exaltation degree. This is a planet operating at full capacity: growth, community, gathering, abundance.</p><p>This is the Joseph Smith who built Nauvoo. Who attracted thousands. Who organized a people and moved them across states. Mindy&#8217;s first instinct when she saw this placement was visceral: <em>cult</em> <em>leader</em>. And honestly? Exalted Jupiter in Cancer in the eleventh house &#8212; faith, mothering, belonging, the warm pull of community &#8212; it does read that way. It reads like someone who can fill a tent and make you feel like you&#8217;ve come home.</p><p>But here&#8217;s where it fractures.</p><p>Jupiter&#8217;s bound and decan lord is Mercury. And Mercury, in this chart, is peregrine &#8212; a wanderer with no essential dignity, no allegiance to the sign it&#8217;s in. The classical description of a peregrine Mercury is <em>morally</em> <em>rudderless</em>. Not malicious, necessarily. Just... untethered. Mercury isn&#8217;t telling Jupiter to commit fraud. Mercury is whispering that the rules are flexible. That the edges are soft. That when you&#8217;re this exalted, this beloved, this clearly chosen &#8212; maybe the normal constraints don&#8217;t apply to you.</p><p>And then there&#8217;s Saturn &#8212; the participating ruler, fallen in Aries &#8212; flavoring the whole period. Not running it. Just seasoning it with restriction, with compromise, with the slow corrosion of integrity that comes when power accumulates faster than character can keep up.</p><p><strong>Was</strong> <strong>he</strong> <strong>a</strong> <strong>fraud</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>second</strong> <strong>stage?</strong> We split the room.</p><p>Bianca said yes. She doesn&#8217;t trust an exalted Jupiter governed by a morally rudderless Mercury, and she&#8217;s not wrong to be suspicious. Ryan said no &#8212; that the classical signifiers aren&#8217;t strong enough to declare fraud, that what we&#8217;re seeing is excess and overreach and the planting of seeds for what comes next, but not deliberate deception. Not yet. Mindy couldn&#8217;t break the tie. Both readings are defensible. Both are incomplete.</p><p>This is the honest answer: the second stage of Joseph Smith&#8217;s life is where certainty goes to die. There&#8217;s too much ambiguity baked into the chart and into the history itself. Was he a polyamory-denying hypocrite, or was he a closeted non-monogamous person in a culture that would destroy him for being open? Was the Kirtland bank a calculated swindle, or was it the same reckless optimism that sank hundreds of other frontier banks in the same decade? Was the expansion of the church a power grab, or was it a genuinely charismatic person doing what charismatic people do &#8212; drawing others into a vision they fully believe in?</p><p>The chart says: both. The chart says: the ground is shifting under his feet and he may not even know it yet.</p><p><strong>Third</strong> <strong>Stage:</strong> <strong>Saturn</strong> <strong>&#8212;</strong> <strong>Fall,</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Eighth</strong> <strong>House,</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>End</strong></p><p>Saturn, in its fall, in the eighth house &#8212; the house of death. Mars applying directly to it. There is no ambiguity here.</p><p>This is the final period of Joseph Smith&#8217;s life, and the chart reads like a closing argument. Saturn fallen in Aries has no dignity, no authority of its own. It&#8217;s operating from a collapsed position, propped up by borrowed power and momentum. Mars &#8212; the planet of violence, of confrontation &#8212; is bearing down on it. The perfection of that conjunction is the image of a man whose life ends not in quiet decline but in gunfire and mob violence and the shattering of everything he built.</p><p>By this stage, the historical record and the chart converge. Joseph Smith had an on-staff assassin. He was running for president. He ordered the destruction of a printing press. He was in Carthage Jail not by accident but because the consequences of his choices &#8212; the polygamy denials, the consolidation of theocratic power, the sheer accumulation of enemies both earned and inevitable &#8212; had finally caught up.</p><p>Whatever innocence the Sun in the ninth house once held, Saturn in its fall in the eighth has consumed it.</p><p><strong>Was</strong> <strong>he</strong> <strong>a</strong> <strong>fraud</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>third</strong> <strong>stage?</strong> Unanimous: Yes.</p><p>No astrologer &#8212; regardless of their feelings about Mormonism, Joseph Smith, or the definition of fraud &#8212; would look at a fallen Saturn in the eighth house with Mars applying and call it the signature of a saint.</p><p><strong>The</strong> <strong>Five</strong> <strong>Points,</strong> <strong>Briefly</strong></p><p>John Dehlin&#8217;s original article laid out five categories of evidence: the treasure-digging with seer stones, the golden plates and lost 116 pages, his claims as a translator of ancient languages, the Kirtland bank scandal, and the polygamy denials.</p><p>We didn&#8217;t walk through all five in detail, but we noted something important: every one of them has arguments on both sides. The treasure-digging was a common practice of the era &#8212; we&#8217;re astrologers casting a horary chart about divination, so we&#8217;re hardly in a position to call divination itself fraudulent. The golden plates may have been described using York Rite Masonic code language that later generations took literally. The bank collapse was one of hundreds. The polygamy existed within a broader cultural moment of sexual experimentation and communal living.</p><p>None of these points are slam dunks. All of them are worth examining. And that ambiguity is precisely why horary is useful here &#8212; not to replace historical analysis, but to offer a different lens on a question that history alone can&#8217;t resolve.</p><p><strong>What</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chart</strong> <strong>Tells</strong> <strong>Us</strong></p><p>The arc of the triplicity lords tells a story that mirrors what the historical record suggests, and what we arrived at in our first reading through different means:</p><p>Joseph Smith began as a sincere seeker. The Sun exalted in the ninth house is not the chart of a grifter. It&#8217;s the chart of a boy who believed &#8212; in God, in himself, in the possibility that the divine would speak directly to someone like him.</p><p>He grew into something more complicated. Jupiter exalted in the eleventh house is the chart of a leader who built something real and powerful, but whose moral compass was increasingly governed by forces without integrity of their own. The seeds of fraud were present in the second stage, even if they hadn&#8217;t fully germinated.</p><p>He ended in collapse. Saturn fallen in the eighth house, with Mars bearing down &#8212; that&#8217;s the chart of someone who, by the end, was operating from a position so compromised that the violence of his death feels almost inevitable in the symbolism.</p><p>Was Joseph Smith a fraud? Not at the beginning. Not entirely in the middle. They accumulate &#8212; across decades of testimony meetings, shelf items, late-night rabbit holes, and the slow unraveling of a worldview you once wore like skin. &#8220;Was Joseph Smith a fraud?&#8221; is one of those questions. It doesn&#8217;t land softly, and it doesn&#8217;t resolve cleanly. Which is exactly why we brought it to the stars.</p><p>The question originated with John Dehlin, host of <em>Mormon</em> <em>Stories</em>, who posed it on his Substack alongside five points of consideration. For those unfamiliar, Dehlin has spent over fifteen years creating space for people navigating faith crises &#8212; a figure once so vilified within the Church that his name carried the same warning label as the CES Letter. <em>Don&#8217;t</em> <em>go</em> <em>there.</em> <em>You&#8217;ll</em> <em>catch</em> <em>apostate</em> <em>leprosy.</em> And yet, stepping outside and actually engaging with his work reveals something far more generous: a man honoring all sides of the faith experience, helping people feel less alone in their unraveling. That generosity is part of what drew us to the question. We didn&#8217;t just take it up academically. We took it up as people who lived inside the thing being questioned.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><a href="https://youtu.be/zcOqRS9jqDQ">To watch the full video, click here.</a></p></div><p><strong>The</strong> <strong>Chart</strong></p><p>Horary astrology works like this: you pose a specific question, and the chart is cast for the moment the astrologer understands and accepts it. In our case, that moment came during a group conversation when we collectively decided &#8212; <em>yes,</em> <em>let&#8217;s</em> <em>do</em> <em>this</em> &#8212; and Ryan screenshotted the clock. That timestamp, set in Berkeley, California, became the birth of the question.</p><p>The chart was cast using Regiomontanus houses, in keeping with the John Frawley tradition taught at the Nightlight School of Astrology, where the three of us &#8212; Ryan, Bianca, and Mindy &#8212; originally met.</p><p>The querent (John, and by extension, us) is represented by the Sun &#8212; ruler of the Leo ascendant &#8212; and the Moon. Both luminaries landed in the ninth house, each in their respective exaltations. The ninth house: religion, philosophy, higher truth. The house of God. Both significators dignified and strong, which tells us the people asking this question come to it with real investment. This isn&#8217;t idle curiosity. It&#8217;s personal.</p><p>But the Sun and Moon don&#8217;t agree on how they feel about what they find there. The Sun, exalted in Aries, holds Mars &#8212; our significator for Joseph Smith &#8212; in high regard. The Moon, exalted in Taurus, views Mars with something closer to disfavor, since Mars is in detriment in Taurus. A mixed testimony. Which felt honest to us. We weren&#8217;t coming to this question with a verdict already in hand.</p><p><strong>Why</strong> <strong>Mars?</strong></p><p>We chose Mars as the significator for Joseph Smith &#8212; lord of the ninth house (Aries on the cusp) &#8212; rather than the more default seventh-house assignment for a named individual. The reasoning: Joseph Smith isn&#8217;t just <em>someone</em> <em>else</em> we&#8217;re asking about. He&#8217;s the godlike figure seated at the center of an entire religious cosmology. &#8220;I know Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God&#8221; &#8212; a sentence drilled into children from birth. The ninth house is the joy of the Sun, the house of God. If any figure in this story belongs there, it&#8217;s him.</p><p>Mars is domiciled in Aries &#8212; essentially dignified, strong in its own sign. But it sits in the eighth house, a dark place that can&#8217;t easily see the ascendant. Strong internally, obscured positionally.</p><p>Something powerful operating in shadow.</p><p><strong>The</strong> <strong>God</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Thieves</strong> <strong>Pays</strong> <strong>a</strong> <strong>Visit</strong></p><p>To address the fraud question directly, we looked to Mercury &#8212; classically the god of thieves, the trickster. And here&#8217;s where the chart gets interesting.</p><p>Mercury at 5&#176;30&#8217; Aries is applying directly to Mars at 7&#176;03&#8217;. It&#8217;s close. It hasn&#8217;t perfected yet. In horary, an applying aspect means something is <em>about</em> <em>to</em> happen but hasn&#8217;t yet arrived. Mercury is also freshly separating from a sextile to Pluto and recently past Neptune &#8212; translating their light onto Mars and Saturn.</p><p>Read that sequence: Mercury collects something from Neptune (illusion, vision, the numinous, the <em>first-vision-shaped</em> thing) and from Pluto (deals made in the underworld, power dynamics, the obsession with death and the afterlife that runs so deep in Mormon theology) &#8212; and carries it all toward Mars.</p><p>Toward Joseph.</p><p>Not <em>from</em> Joseph outward. <em>Toward</em> him.</p><p>This is the image of a man who was the object of his own fraud before he ever became the perpetrator of anyone else&#8217;s. A person subject to delusion, not necessarily manufacturing it. Someone who ate the mushrooms in the Sacred Grove &#8212; maybe literally &#8212; and genuinely saw something, and had no framework for understanding it beyond the revivalist fervor of his time.</p><p><strong>The</strong> <strong>Zeitgeist</strong> <strong>Defense</strong></p><p>This matters historically, too. Joseph Smith didn&#8217;t operate in a vacuum. The early 1800s were thick with upstart prophets, spiritual revivals, polyamorous communes, and wildcat banks printing their own currency. The Cochranites practiced plural marriage decades before Joseph claimed revelation on the subject &#8212; and many Cochranite converts folded directly into the early Mormon church. Joseph&#8217;s bank wasn&#8217;t unusual; its collapse wasn&#8217;t unusual. His polygamy wasn&#8217;t unusual. His claim to speak with God wasn&#8217;t unusual.</p><p>What was unusual is that his movement survived.</p><p><strong>And</strong> <strong>Then</strong> <strong>Came</strong> <strong>Brigham</strong></p><p>The tenth house &#8212; the house that follows the ninth &#8212; represents what came <em>after</em> Joseph. His successor. His legacy made institutional. In this chart, that&#8217;s Venus, domiciled in Taurus, sitting right on the Midheaven. Pleasant. Dignified. Happy where she is.</p><p>And applying directly to the fixed star Algol.</p><p>Algol &#8212; &#8220;the most difficult of the fixed stars&#8221; &#8212; carries significations of deception, destruction, losing one&#8217;s head (literally or figuratively). And that&#8217;s where the real fraud enters the picture. Not with Joseph in the grove, but with the institutional machinery that came after: Brigham Young&#8217;s authoritarian empire-building, the whitewashing of history, the Correlation program that bleached every rough edge from the narrative and presented it as squeaky-clean revelation.</p><p>Joseph&#8217;s story was taken after his death and used to instigate something that looks a lot more like fraud than anything Joseph himself set in motion. Venus, happy and domiciled, walking straight into Algol on the most public point in the chart. Our read of the chart: <strong>No</strong> <strong>&#8212;</strong> <strong>but</strong> <strong>it&#8217;s</strong> <strong>complicated.</strong></p><p>He was deceptive, certainly. Deception was woven into early Mormon culture as a survival skill &#8212; the ability to say something technically true while meaning something entirely different. (Ryan&#8217;s ancestor, asked if the group was &#8220;bearing arms,&#8221; cheerfully confirmed they were &#8212; meaning the arms they were born with.) Joseph was a product of that culture and a master of it.</p><p>But fraud implies something more deliberate. Bernie Madoff was a fraud. It&#8217;s the area seventy looking you in the eye and telling you that wearing a cap-sleeve t-shirt has &#8220;eternal consequences&#8221;. It&#8217;s the way authority trickles down until a fianc&#233; feels entitled to tell you your skirt isn&#8217;t modest enough because he can&#8217;t control his own reactions. We&#8217;ve lived in a hierarchy where the &#8220;truth&#8221; was used as a tool to enforce guilt, checking records for minor dress code infractions to justify shaming someone&#8217;s soul.</p><p>When we talk about the Daimon or the moment of astrology now, we&#8217;re reclaiming a participatory cosmos. We are acknowledging that we are human beings who can engage with the divine without a middleman checking our worthiness. Whether it&#8217;s an ancient astrologer invoking a spirit or an everyday person participating in a conversation with their own Daimon, it&#8217;s about a direct connection that doesn&#8217;t need to be policed. Learning how to navigate this pressure without outright lying became a formative skill, one that reflected the broader culture of conformity within the church.</p><p>That tension intensified at BYU&#8211;Hawai&#699;i, where Ryan studied for several years. The setting was visually idyllic but institutionally rigid. Rules governing appearance, sexuality, and behavior were enforced unevenly, often revealing patterns of favoritism and gendered double standards. For Ryan, the problem was not discipline itself, but hypocrisy&#8212;the disconnect between moral rhetoric and lived reality. These contradictions eroded trust more deeply than doctrinal complexity ever could.</p><p>Ironically, church history did not destabilize Ryan&#8217;s faith. A respected professor taught openly about controversial aspects of Mormon history, acknowledging that truth would eventually surface regardless. That transparency provided context rather than crisis. What proved far more corrosive was learning about the church&#8217;s financial wealth. Through research conducted in restricted sections of the university library, Ryan discovered the vast scope of church assets. The scale of accumulated wealth stood in stark contrast to the limited humanitarian engagement he observed, raising ethical questions that could not be resolved through faith alone.</p><p>Approaching the age when Mormon men are expected to serve missions, Ryan sought guidance through the prescribed spiritual channels: prayer, fasting, and obedience. The anticipated confirmation never arrived. In Mormon theology, the absence of spiritual affirmation is often interpreted as a &#8220;no,&#8221; and Ryan chose to honor that answer. While internally coherent, this decision carried significant social consequences. Men who do not serve missions often experience diminished status within Mormon communities, affecting relationships, dating, and belonging.</p><p>Eventually, Ryan left BYU&#8211;Hawai&#699;i and chose to pursue what he described as his own mission&#8212;one not assigned by the institution but shaped by direct experience. He traveled extensively through the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, engaging with people, cultures, and belief systems outside the Mormon framework. That journey led him to Thailand, where he participated in a ten-day silent meditation retreat at a Buddhist monastery. The experience proved transformative.</p><p>Ryan remained connected to the monastery for nearly a year, deeply immersed in Buddhist practice and seriously considering ordination. For the first time, spirituality felt immediate rather than mediated, experiential rather than prescribed. Ultimately, practical realities and unresolved internal conflicts&#8212;many rooted in Mormon conditioning around family, sexuality, and purpose&#8212;led him to step away from monastic life. Still, the experience marked a permanent shift in how he understood faith.</p><p>Mindy contextualizes Ryan&#8217;s story through astrology, noting the significance of the nineteenth year as a ninth house perfection year&#8212;traditionally associated with belief systems, philosophy, religion, and long-distance travel. Within Mormonism, this timing coincides with mission expectations, a pattern that raises questions about how developmental, spiritual, and symbolic cycles are institutionally leveraged. Raised in a remote area of New Zealand, her father served as a branch president (akin to a bishop), deeply embedded in both the Mormon Church and the surrounding community. She grew up not just inside the church&#8212;but as a visible symbol of it. Being &#8220;Matthew&#8217;s daughter&#8221; meant carrying a kind of public mantle, one of moral clarity and spiritual responsibility.</p><p>Her education followed suit. High school in a Mormon boarding school, then university at BYU&#8211;Hawaii&#8212;an insular path where nearly everyone shared the same beliefs, practices, and worldview. She worked at the Polynesian Cultural Center as a dancer, part of the collective performance of faith and culture that so many of us know well. Looking back, she describes it all as a bubble&#8212;a carefully curated world where questions were rare and rebellion was subtle, quiet, and often internal.</p><p>But life has a way of shifting. In her 30s, as a wife, a mother of two, and a full-time worker juggling the weight of roles and expectations, Bianca began to feel the ground beneath her faith start to move. At first, it wasn&#8217;t about leaving. It was about taking a break&#8212;finding time to breathe, to remember who she was beyond the identities given to her. A pause, not a departure.</p><p>Then came the turning point. A crumbling marriage, a deep questioning of her spiritual alignment, and the sense that returning to church would mean returning to a self she no longer recognized.</p><blockquote><p>&#8220;To go back would mean I was taking steps backwards&#8230; and I&#8217;m always about moving forward.&#8221;</p></blockquote><p>What emerged in that space was not emptiness&#8212;but clarity. All of us were raised in the Mormon tradition. All of us left it. It was also our shared devotion to astrology&#8212;not as a belief system, but as a language. A language that helped us name the ache of transformation. That reminded us there is order and rhythm in the chaos. That gave us a framework to understand why certain endings had to happen, and how new beginnings were always on their way.</p><p>For Mindy, this journey has meant rediscovering self while navigating parenting without the scaffolding of church guidance. For Bianca, it&#8217;s been the deep, unsettling work of peeling back layers of inherited identity to see what was left. For Ryan, it&#8217;s been the revelation that archetypes&#8212;those timeless patterns&#8212;speak just as powerfully as scripture ever did.</p><p>We aren&#8217;t here to teach. This won&#8217;t be a formal course or another place to prescribe beliefs. What we&#8217;re creating is more like a conversation in a quiet room, where stories are shared slowly and meaning is shaped over time.</p><p>Each of us will be sharing our personal stories in upcoming episodes&#8212;where we&#8217;ve come from, what we&#8217;ve learned, and how astrology has helped us find ground underfoot again.
